What is naturopathy and how can it help your skin health?
"Go see a naturopath," they said. A naturopath??
Isn’t that someone who mixes potions in a cauldron and casts spells with crystals and flowers? How on earth is that going to help with my skin journey!?
If this is what you have thought, don't worry... you are not alone!
Naturopathy has its roots in ancient healing traditions, where our ancestors relied on nature's resources to cure ailments.
Today, naturopaths integrate modern science with traditional practices to offer a holistic (that means considering the mind, body and 'whole person') approach to health, including skin care.
When it comes to supporting skin health, naturopathy focuses on nourishing the body with vital nutrients, addressing underlying issues that could be affecting the skin and its barrier, and creating individualised care plans. This approach works on the skin from the inside out, targeting deeper levels of the body’s systems rather than focusing on just the surface.
But what does this look like?
One example could be if you're experiencing persistent breakouts or skin inflammation
- A naturopath would assess whether nutritional deficiencies, hormonal imbalances, or gut health are contributing to your concerns through gut testing, pathology work (yes this includes blood and stool tests), food diaries and assessing your whole body health visually.
By supporting various body systems, your skin receives care for essential missing links needed to repair and regenerate and achieve your skin goals in a sustainable way.
Naturopathic support can assist in reaching your skin goals by addressing key topics including;
hormonal imbalances
microbiome imbalances
detoxification support
inflammation prevention
stress and allergy management
enhancing immune system function
This holistic approach helps treat common skin conditions including acne, eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, dermatitis, and premature aging, ensuring long-term skin health.
Alongside this, naturopaths use various tools to support healthy skin, including:
Diet and lifestyle adjustments: Tailored plans to nourish your skin from within.
Functional testing: Identifying internal imbalances that may cause skin issues.
Herbal remedies and supplements: Natural treatments to improve dermal health by boosting circulation, reducing inflammation, and balancing hormones.
Energetic support: Techniques like Bush Flower Essences and homeopathy to address stress or emotional factors affecting your skin.
By treating the skin at a deeper level, naturopathy empowers you to achieve long-lasting results. If you've tried everything—from expensive products to "quick-fix" treatments—and are still struggling with skin issues, naturopathic care could provide the honest, evidence-based additional support you need for a radiant complexion.
